McCartneys Battle Against Fur

Wed, 19 Apr 2006

Animal rights campaigners Paul McCartney and wife Heather consider that UK shoppers could, unbeknownst to them, be buying real fur. A BBC documentary discovered that there is no legal necessity to label fur garments, so some of the public may indeed not know what they are purchasing.

The programme tonight shows them fighting to curtail the market for fur products.

Paul and Heather have also been outspoken in their criticism of famous celebrities who wear fur; they also campaign strongly against trade in dog and cat fur.

Paul admits he wore fur when he was in The Beatles, yet he says he did not know what he was doing.

Heather has long protested at fashion shops, like Jennifer Lopez's Sweetface label based in New York.

Sbe says of celebrity fur wearers, that if she bumped into the likes of Linda Evangelista or Cindy Crawford, she would not be gentle with them as they have been reminded time and time again.

The programme considers the £7bn global fur industry and chats to sylists, client and the fur traders themselves.

It shows Heather at a Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) gala in the USA and Brussels, where she asks for a European ban on dog and cat fur.

Heather fronts the Peta anti-fur advertisement campaign with the slogan: "If you wouldn't wear your dog, please don't wear any fur."

Real Story: McCartneys versus fur, will be broadcast on BBC1 tonight at 9pm.
