Weight Gain Flares Heartburn

Thu, 29 Jun 2006

For healthy women out there, be careful as those extra pounds gained can cause heartburn.

Even a slight weight gain can increase the risk of women getting heartburn in women.

The researchers are not sure that these results apply to men .

Boston University's medical school and Medical Centre compiled a questionnaire on and dispatched it to 10,000 women.

6,215 women, 60% of participants, stated that they had mild or moderate heartburn symptoms. Women who had put on weight since the age of 18 are more likely to suffer from heartburn.

A few pounds on can cause or exacerbate heartburn symptoms, so researchers write The New England Journal of Medicine .

A Body Mass Index ( BMI )increase of 3.5 plus is related to an increased risk of heartburn.

Being overweight or obese increases risk of heartburn .

There is also that eternal question. Which came first, the heartburn or the weight gain!
