How To Get A Pay Rise

Tue, 30 May 2006

Most women do not consider that they are worth a pay rise.

In fact 64% of women have never asked their bosses for a pay rise, despite the fact that women earn 13% less than men .

Women do not as high a sense of self worth compared to men, so are less likely to ask for more money .

Women are of course excellent in people and conciliatory skills. However, such skills tend to be undervalued by management .

The trick is to work out what your qualities are and highlight and develop them. Should your manager be keen to improve client relations, then make this your priority and let him/her know. A performance review is a good time to do this.

Should you not have regular appraisals, then give your boss regular updates of your performance, say perhaps every three months.

Basically, do your own PR, which is something a lot of women find uncomfortable.

Some of this may be due to "impostor syndrome". Women tend to worry that they are not great at the job . Hence, they do not ask for more money. Yet the message bosses can get is - are women so cheap!

Understand what your boss wants from you work wise and you are more than half way there.

So essentially value yourself and move with that. Turn your self worth into £s..
