British Diet Healthier

The British diet is improving. We are purchasing more vegetables and fresh fruit.

We are cutting down on potatoes, white bread and alcohol . We appear to be losers in moving towards a healthier lifestyle, so new research shows.

Skimmed milk is very much a favourite, with whole milk taking a dip in popularity.

We spent £34.31 a week on food and drink in the 12 months prior to March 2005, an increase of 2% on 2004. The amount spent on eating out went up by 5% over that same period.

Wholemeal bread is much more popular. Shoppers buy 2% more fresh fruit than the past 12 months and 2.5% more vegetables, excluding potatoes. Whole milk sales have gone down 18% compared to hikes of 5% and 2% for semi and fully skimmed varieties.

Alcohol consumption at home has gone down 4%m, with it 7% down on what is drunk outside.

Confectionery consumption was not however affected by the new healthy eating; it actually went up by 2%.

Chinese, Indian and Thai restaurants are the top choices in the eating out category, with 7% of us buying more such food.

So the good news is we are eating more healthily.
