Exercise Can Reduce Blood Pressure

Wed, 20 Aug 2008

Exercise makes for the most single important lifestyle change for those with high blood pressure, so says recent research.

This new study highlights how 70% of doctors do not tell patients with high blood pressure about the importance of exercise and physical activity.

The study was undertaken by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. 17,474 individuals participated in this study and 4,686 of them had high blood pressure.

Only a third of those with high blood pressure stated that their doctor had requested that they increase physical activity in order to reduce their blood pressure.

Yet, 71% of patients with high blood pressure saw a drop in their blood pressure when they increased their physical activity, which means that they listened when doctors told them to exercise more, according to the report.

Exercise, as well as weight loss, a low-salt diet, a low saturated fat diet, as well as diets full of fruits and vegetables, all have a beneficial effect on blood pressure.

Hence, it is critical for doctors to recommend exercise to most patients in order to improve their blood pressure control .
